Why do I need flood insurance if I live in a low-risk flood zone?
- Even if you live in a low-risk zone that does not mean that you are entirely safe from flooding. In fact, 30% of the claims paid out by flood insurance actually occur in low-risk zones.
Why do I need flood insurance, my house has never flooded?
- Just because your house has not flooded in the recent past, does not mean that it will not in the near future. Flooding often occurs in areas that it has not happened in before and surprises the residents who are unprepared and ultimately suffer significant financial losses because of it. It is much smarter to purchase flood insurance so that in the event that there is a flood, you will be protected from suffering such a tremendous loss.
Why do I have to buy flood insurance?
- If you live in Natomas flood insurance is mandatory. When Natomas is rezoned, it will become a high-risk zone and anyone who has received a federal or federally backed loan for property in Natomas will be forced to purchase flood insurance (at the higher rate if they do not attain it prior to the rezoning at the Preferred Risk Rate)
Do I get a discount if I am in a low-to-moderate risk area?
- Yes. The Preferred Risk Policy is designed for properties in low-to-moderate risk areas and the rates are substantially lower than those for properties in high-risk areas.
Can I purchase flood insurance if I don't live in a high-risk flood zone?
- Yes. Not only can you purchase flood insurance in a low or moderate risk zone, but you can generally get the same coverages for a fraction of the cost!
If I shop around, will I be able to find lower rates for flood insurance elsewhere?
- No. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has an arrangement with private companies to sell and service insurance policies, but NFIP sets the Natomas flood insurance rates for these policies and they are the same for all private insurance companies.
